The Nun of the Bus (Sister Simone Campbell)

In our latest podcast, Marcus Atkinson and I, interview a powerhouse of a woman - Sister Simone Campbell. Sister Simone has served as Executive Director of NETWORK Lobby for Catholic Social Justice since 2004. She is a religious leader, attorney and poet with extensive experience in public policy and advocacy for systemic change. In Washington, she lobbies on issues that help “mend the gaps” in income and wealth in the U.S., focused specifically on how they disproportionately affect people of color and women. Around the country, she is a noted speaker and educator on these public policy issues.

She is probably best known as the organizer of the  “Nuns on the Bus” tours, the first of which occurred in 2012 to oppose the “Ryan Budget” approved by the House of Representatives. This budget would decimate programs meant to help people in need. Since then, Sister Simone has led six cross-country “Nuns on the Bus” trips, focused on tax justice, healthcare, economic justice, comprehensive immigration reform, voter turnout, bridging divides in politics and society, and mending the gaps in wealth and access in our nation.
